Your muffler is definitely too old after 80,000 miles or four years. This being said, the muffler may need to be replaced prior to this if it gets damaged or dies prematurely. On average, a muffler lasts between 40,000 miles and 80,000 miles. If you are having any of the problems listed below, bring your vehicle to our shop so we can remove the old muffler and replace it with a new one. While we are at it, we will also inspect the rest of your exhaust system to see if anything else is damaged.

Too Much Noise

A damaged muffler can release too much exhaust system noise because it is no longer able to muffle the noise. When this happens, your automobile will be much louder while it is running. In fact, it will rumble and roar even louder when you press down on the accelerator. As an aside, this can also be a sign that someone has stolen the catalytic converter out of your exhaust system.

Corrosion/Damage

A muffler should also be replaced if it is corroded or damaged. If you look at your muffler and see that it is rusted or that it has holes in it, it’s time for a new muffler. If the muffler is dented or pitted, it’s time for a new muffler. The muffler takes a lot of abuse from road debris and dirt and grime. Consequently, the muffler can get damaged if a large piece of road debris hits it.

Dripping Water

Another sign that your muffler is too old is leaking water coming from the muffler. The muffler will deal with condensation naturally. This is not a problem. This being said, if you see water dripping from the muffler, you’ve got a damaged muffler that needs to be replaced. There’s no need to worry. Our certified technicians have vast experience in working with vehicle exhaust systems.

Overheating

Finally, if you have been having problems with your automobile overheating frequently, this could actually be caused by the muffler. If the muffler is leaking, or if any other part of your exhaust system is leaking, the hot exhaust can be released into the engine. The exhaust is hot enough to increase the engine temperature above the maximum temperature of 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

Give us a call today if you are having any of the problems discussed above. We would be happy to inspect your muffler to determine whether it needs to be replaced. If it does, we will do so.
